The Sheriff Work Program is an alternative to incarceration program that substitutes community labor, rather than incarceration, for carefully selected jail bound offenders. Participants perform eight to ten hours of work in-lieu of one day of confinement in jail.
In order to participate in the program the individual must pay a $15.00 daily fee and register with the Jail prior to beginning their first work day. The work is performed for county and non-profit agencies in Blaine County.
It is the intent of Sheriff J. Walt Femling to maintain the highest standards of public confidence, credibility and public safety when implementing alternatives to confinement programs. Participation in the programs shall occur only when the court concludes that a person meets the specified criteria.
The Sheriff Work Program offers many benefits to Blaine County taxpayers, community agencies and the criminal justice system and offenders:

  • Provides judges alternative sentencing.
  • Provides community service labor to build/repair/improve community agency and county properties.
  • Reduces jail overcrowding and improves jail utilization for more serious offenders.
  • Reduces offender dependency on institutionalization.
  • Allows offenders the opportunity to maintain existing employment, education and/or family ties, responsibilities and obligations through program flexibility.
