Press Release – Halloween Weekend Arrests Reflect Driving Under the Influence Concern

The Blaine County Sheriff Office is concerned about increases in Driving Under the Influence arrests.

“This past Halloween weekend we saw five DUI arrests countywide, one of which was a felony and another was connected to felony drug charges,” Sheriff Steve Harkins said. Four of thCABRITO, KEVIN MANUELe five arrests were made by BCSO deputies.

On Sunday, October 31, 2021, at approximately 1:47 a.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies initiated a traffic stop on Main Street near First Street in Ketchum. Idaho. The driver,  Kevin Manual Cabrito, age 23 of Bellevue, Idaho, was subsequently arrested and charged with misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence, I.C. 18-8004(1)(D). During a search incident to arrest, controlled substances were located on Cabrito’s person and he was also charged with Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), I.C. 37-2732(C)(1), misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana) Less than Three Ounces, I.C. 37-2732(C)(3), and misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, I.C. 37-2734A(1). Cabrito was arraigned Monday in Magistrate Court and later released on a $750 bond.

Also on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at approximately 9:11 p.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies initiated a traffic stop on North Main Street near West Myrtle Street in Hailey, Idaho. The driver, Karen Elizabeth Durand, age 35 of Rigby, Idaho, was subsequently arrested and charged with felony Driving Under the Influence, I.C. 18-8004(1)(A)(F). Durand was previously convicted of a felony DUI in Blaine County in 2016 and a felony DUI in Madison County in 2019. Durand was also charged with misdemeanor Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol, I.C. 23-505. Durand was arraigned Monday in Magistrate Court and is currently being held in the Blaine County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.DURAND, KAREN ELIZABETH

“At this point in the year, Blaine County has had as many DUI arrests as we did in all of 2020 with two more months to go. We can not stress this enough, every time you get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking you are risking your life or the life of someone else,” stated Sheriff Harkins. “Whatever it takes, never drive impaired.”
